Dockmaster, Larry Travis

I hope by now, all of your boats have been winterized and put away for the winter.  It seems like the season went by way too fast.  I’m sure spring will be here before we know it.

We were able to almost complete five new finger docks this past fall.  Work still needs to be done an a couple of them and it is scheduled to be completed in the early spring.  At this time, we are done rebuilding fingers as we have enough completed for everyone to be moored on one side or the other.  Even numbers, starboard side, bow in.  Odd numbers are port side, bow in.  I will be sending out the 2025 dock assignment list the beginning of April.  Most, if not everyone will be on a new finger in your original spot.

We have a much more complex project for next year and that is to replace all of the main dock deck boards including a center stringer and new poles where required.  More to come about this project as we get closer to next season.

Below are a couple of pictures, courtesy of Bob Hodgins, that show what the water level is between shore and our main dock.  In all my years at the club, I have never witnessed water levels this low.  The lake itself is almost as low as the chart datum.  I know you probably won’t want to hear this but we need some snow this winter to help bring the levels back up.  I don’t foresee any danger of high water (2017/2019) happening again.

My wife and I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Fleet Captain, Darren Leonard

Season Review: 2024 was a fantastic year of racing at Oak Orchard Yacht Club! We had good breeze on most Thursdays, and raced every scheduled race but one! The Henri was well attended with 16 boats signed up. The Lakeside Race was reinstituted for the first time in two decades and was a fun and somewhat blustery windward-leeward race. The Ketchup Race was an interesting one! The race start was delayed due to heavy rain and thunder. The race started off in light breeze and built steadily until boats had to shorten sail and had a rollicking beat back to the finish in ever increasing seas. All in all, a great season!

Anticipation for 2025 is high! Less than two hundred days until the first race on June 5th!

Trophy Races for 2025 You can plan on it!: July 12 - Henri Cup Invitational, August 9 - Lakeside Race, August 30 - Ketchup Race

Summer Sailstice is June 21, 2025: Held on the closest Saturday to the Summer Solstice, sailors all over North America take this day as a celebration of summer and sailing! This event is as informal as you can get. If we can get a bunch of boats out on the lake that day for a daysail, great!

Notice to RacersThe Racing Rules of Sailing is published every four years by World Sailing, the international authority for the sport. These rules, amended by US “prescriptions,” govern sailboat racing in the United States. The Racing Rules of Sailing for 2025-2028 take effect on January 1, 2025. All racers should have a paper or digital copy on board when racing and be familiar with the changes.

Fleet Captain, Youth Sailing, Becky Almeter

Youth sailing has obtained an inflatable boat to be used for a safety boat. This will greatly help our ability to safely access students while on the water.

I would like to spread the word that we are seeking a Head Instructor for next summer. This position would be for the duration of camp and take the lead on all instruction and overseeing the other instructors. Please contact me if you have any suggestions of candidates or where I could post this position for greater visibility.

The proceeds from bottle and can return totaled $209.00. Thank you to everyone who contributed, including volunteers who took the cans to Albion to return. It seems like a small amount, but it covered the cost of an engine repair on one of the safety boats, so well worth your cans!

There are annual holiday parades in both Medina and Albion that Youth Sailing has entered a float in years past. I won’t be able to coordinate these this year, but if anyone is interested in doing it, let me know and I can send you the information.

Vice Commodore, Jeff Thuman

Members,

Thank you to everyone who supported the Restaurant and Bar this season. Although the restaurant was not as well attended as I had hoped, we were able to provide a full season of food and bar services for the membership and guests.

We were not able to sign a contract with an already established restaurant operator and decided to try running the restaurant ourselves. We hired the necessary staff, purchased food and supplies, created and priced the menu and made some upgrades to the dining room. We also purchased several items for the kitchen and created a food and liquor pantry space in the old liquor closet.

This was not the season I had envisioned when I accepted the responsibility of the Vice Commodore, but the experience was great, and we had fun running a restaurant for the first time.

We were fortunate to have help from Larry and Carol Travis in picking up and putting away the food order almost every week. A huge thank you to them for all the help! We couldn’t have done it without you.

I also want to thank all of the staff that worked hard to provide a good experience for our members and guests. Thank you to everyone that waited tables, tended bar, cooked and washed dishes (it’s hard to explain how many dirty dishes there were!).

The work has been ongoing for a couple of months looking for a good, dependable restauranter to provide food and bar service for 2025. Thank you, Bob Hodgins, for leading the charge and talking to several restaurant owners that could provide the food choices and quality we are looking for. At this time, we have a couple of owners interested in continuing communications with us. We’re hopeful we will come to an agreement and get a signed contract in early 2025.

There is still a vacancy in the Vice Commodore position. If you are interested in filling this role, please reach out to John Zimmerman, Bob Hodgins or myself. I will be available to share my experience with anyone who would like more information.

Thank you,

Jeff and Chris Thuman

Marketing Director, Trish Brantingham

One of the responsibilities of the marketing director is to collect information about comparable clubs each year.  The following compares membership and costs at Brockport Yacht Club, Genesee Yacht Club, and Olcott Yacht Club.  The information about OYC is sketchy – if anyone has a contact there who would be willing to share membership information, we could add it to this report.

Brockport Yacht Club voted in 10 new members this year bringing them to 95 corporate members (equivalent of OOYC Full Member)  (max allowed 100) and 3 special members for a net gain of 8 members this year.

Some interesting facts from this year’s new members:

3 of them live within 1 mile of the club

2 of them had been racing crew in previous years and want their own boat

4 of them are friends / family of existing members

3 of them learned about us from the website and either inquired for a tour or just showed up at the club one afternoon and informally met with whoever was onsite that day.

2 of them started racing on Wednesday nights after becoming a prospective member

1 joined the club based on buying an existing member’s boat

3 of them have limited experience as dingy sailors, do not own keelboats and are looking to grow their sailing knowledge

2 are powerboaters, the rest are sailors

Age distribution:

                Under 40 – 3

                40 – 60 -  4

                Over 60 - 3

There were an additional 18 serious inquiries that were discouraged or turned away because there wasn’t a good fit.  Most of these were people just looking for a cheap dock and not really interested in being part of a club.  Some balked at the cost, membership requirements, or were deemed to be total nutjobs.  There was more interest this year than in a long time.

Genesee Yacht Club has gone from an aging club (majority of members over 60) with dwindling membership to a growing club.  They attribute their growth entirely to their Newby program in which anyone can sign up through Meet Up for a boat ride and get connected to a club member who will do a very brief safety orientation and then take them out.  They get 6 – 8 people each week. I don’t have numbers, but anecdotally, my contact thinks a majority of participants are under 30 but new members are 50 +.  I believe the program is free.  They have 135 members and 12 provisional members (a year during which they have to “earn” membership) out of 150 allowed.

Olcott Yacht Club

I don’t have a contact at OYC and information on their website is limited.  Perhaps someone else has a source of information?  The fact that they offered half price memberships in 2024 indicates that they had/have a membership problem.

Rear Commodore, Larry Beneway

It’s getting awfully close to the holiday season and most all the boats are put to bed for the upcoming winter. Thanks to all who came out for the club closing. I appreciate all the help.

We’re not going to have another work party to manage the leaves. Up until this weekend the trees haven’t been in a hurry to shed their leaves. Now that they are, it's time for some turkey and lots of lousy weather so they’ll be there next spring.

I hope everyone has a great holiday season and we’ll see you in the spring. We’re dreaming of some sun and warmer weather. Maybe it’s time to head south and see what kind of mess the weather made of the gulf coast of Florida. I think I hear my fishing rod calling me.

Hey there OOYC members!

We are now offering half-price memberships and half-price docking to all new/first-year members for 2025! WOWZA! Before annual club dues come around, reach out to those boating friends of yours that could be looking for a change. And hey, if this offer fills our empty slips this year, we MAY NOT offer this again. I’ve already had some inquiries!

What do you do in the off-season? I will likely drop off our little sailboat for some fiberglass work and may order a new sail cover. I also enjoy cozying up in front of the fireplace with sailing books and magazines. If I end up somewhere tropical, I will be on a mission to find a local yacht club and bum a ride off of a friendly local. Perhaps even leave them with some OOYC swag! Please send me any photos or testimonials of anything you do in the off-season related to being a part of a boating club. I would love to share your stories and photos in one of our upcoming newsletters.

Let us know if you’d like to purchase anything from our club store for Christmas presents. Remember: We have gift certificates available as well!

In this off-season, I also plan to attend Toronto’s International Boat Show to drool, dream, and LEARN!

Saturday is completely dedicated to sailors with several seminars and testimonials from International pros! (read below)

Connect with fellow sailors and industry experts while watching some inspiring and informative seminars that will leave you wanting to set sail!

Don’t miss Sailor’s Day – it will be a sailing celebration!

Melodie Schaffer, Ocean Racing

Melodie Schaffer is one of Canada’s top offshore sailors!

Melodie Schaffer embarked on the inaugural Globe 40 double handed race around the world in her Class 40 boat 'Whiskey Jack' . The race entailed 8 legs, around all three Capes. She sailed 35,000 miles in this adventure with 174 days on the ocean. From torn sails, to avoiding pirates, to no wind instruments or communication at times, the challenges were immense. Despite the challenges, she won leg 7 and set three race records including the overall one of 347 nautical miles in a 24-hour period.

She was the only female skipper for the entire race, and the first Canadian woman to race around the world.

Awarded the Canadian Rolex sailor of the year award for 2023, the Gerry Roufs Canadian Offshore Sailor award for 2024 and the Women of Inspiration award inaugural Women in Sport award for 2024.

Meet Melodie and see her Class 40 boat ‘Whiskey Jack’ on display. Learn more about Offshore Racing and her preparations for the 2025 -26 Globe 40 Race.

New content is being added to the program daily, so continue to check out their website.

Hope to see you there!

As winter approaches and the start of a new year is around the corner please take some time to start to look for the upcoming events and calendar updates for the 2025 year. Once the Holidays are behind us we will begin updating the Calendar of Events on the website.

One of the topics we would like to cover in this issue of the Bullfrog is the OOYC Facebook page.  I believe some of our members do not even know about the OOYC Facebook page. We are trying to get more activity on the Facebook pages and increase our marketing on the pages to help introduce our club to possible new members. We are looking for people to post more activities and fun experiences at OOYC. I have made active links below that can take you to each page.  I have also included brief descriptions of each page. One page is an outward "Public" page. This page allows exposure to the public and allows anyone to view posts and information. We still can control posting on this page since an admin must ok any posting to cut down on spam and unwanted posts.

The other is an inward facing page that only members are able to see, this can allow for internal discussions and posting between members.

This is the Public "outward" Facing page. Just click on this link below or search on Facebook "Oak Orchard Yacht Club"

Oak Orchard Yacht Club Public | Facebook

Here is a list of the last posting and also activity.  Let's try to increase this the coming year and post about OOYC and activities.

This is the inward Facing Page.  We try to only allow members to join and post on this page, So if you need communication specific to Club members or events that you do not want public this is the FaceBook page to post on, Click and follow the link. below:

Notes from the Commodore, Bob Hodgins

As our year closes out there is really a lot of work going on planning for next year.

Restaurant status for next year – As we have discussed often in recent months, it is not prudent for the club to operate our own restaurant. We simply cannot afford any financial risk, so the search continues for an operator. We are currently in talks with a few potentials but are a long way from having anything secured for next season. If anyone knows a restauranter or caterer that would be willing to talk about our operation, please let me know.

Annual election of officers and board members – Following is the list of nominations for officers and board members for 2025. Please note there are still two open positions with no names. Our constitution states that we advertise the list of nominations in November and vote in December.

Since there has not been a contested election in years, and likely will not be again this year, the board can vote the slate at the December board meeting. There is still time to volunteer for the open positions. If no one offers to fill those spots, the board can appoint someone to fill them anytime they have a candidate.

Marketing group – A new group had a first meeting recently to brainstorm about how to grow membership. Many good ideas came from that first meeting. That group included Darren Leonard, Dan and Amanda Butler, Kim Hofmann, Trish Brantingham and myself. We concluded that we cannot just keep doing what we have been doing and expect any better results, so it is time for bold action. Most of our marketing focus for the coming year will be social media based with the expectation of large returns for minimal cost. It will also target a younger demographic than currently exists in our aging membership. Proposals that came from that meeting that were then approved by the board are:

-Eliminate the requirement for work hours. We have always called ourselves a “working club” and do not see that changing. The fact that we require new full members to contribute 20 work hours has become a barrier to signing up new members. Our current system of attempting to track those hours and then billing members at year end for unworked hours is a hassle and then causes ill will, and not everyone billed pays their obligation. In other words, the system really does not work well. We will still have our regular workdays and encourage ALL members to come and help maintain our club to keep dues low. The workdays can be fun and a great way to get to know your fellow members.

-Include a Social membership to any parent that registers and pays for a child to attend youth sailing class. We have always extended this verbally, but we will now make it official by giving them a membership card that is valid for the entire season. The idea is to try and get the families to be a part of the club, as opposed to just dropping off the kids.

-Establish a class of membership for Intermediate Members. We used to have a membership class called intermediate, but it got dropped along the way. It is a class used for anyone wanting to be a full member that is of legal age up until the year they turn 40. The annual dues will be $500 which is between the cost of Social membership and full membership. They will have the same privileges and rights as full members, but at a reduced cost.

-We are offering an “Introductory Special”. This will be available to any new full member that rents a dock, 50% off for the first year. This is a big deal; it makes a membership and dock cost combined the lowest on Oak Orchard for any dock. It may attract new people to give us a try and lure them from other more expensive places. If they return for a second year they will pay full price. It will be our mission to welcome them and make them feel at home, so they see the value in our club.

Senior Director, John Zimmerman

Earlier in November our Budget Committee met to prepare our financial plan for 2025. The Sail School, Restaurant and Bar were left out of our forecasts for next year and will be developed as we know more about those operations. Sail School has traditionally been operated as a standalone program keeping track of their own income and expenses which do not affect our club operations. The expectation for the restaurant and bar is that they will be operated by an outside vendor, taking responsibility for their own income and expenses therefore little to none of our food and drink services will be run through our club books. We continue to search for someone who can supply the type of restaurant service that our club membership indicated we want at the September member meeting.

The 2025 Budget worksheet shows our current year, 2024, income and expenses compared to the forecasted ones for 2025. We have lost money each of the past three years on our restaurant operation due to a variety of reasons which we have discussed at previous member meetings. Even with separating the restaurant and bar financials our budget is very tight for next year. Increasing our membership numbers and filling more docks will go a long way to improve our financial position.

We will be presenting plans for increased online and social media marketing as these are developed over the next few months. We have some great offers to help attract new boating members, so everyone’s help is needed to spread the word.

Thank you to our Budget committee members Bob Hodgins, Jeff Thuman, Chris Zimmerman and Larry Beneway for your help in preparing next year’s budget. If you have questions about our plans, please feel free to contact me at johnz11540@gmail.com or (716) 432-1810.

Since the beginning OOYC has depended on its members to contribute their time to the many jobs required to keep our club running. Full members have had work hours required each year while Associate and Social members have not. The work hours required of full members have satisfied only a small fraction of the time it takes to successfully operate our club. Thankfully many Associate and Social members have regularly chipped in to help with the work to be done. With relaxing work hour requirements next year, we hope to remove one obstacle we commonly hear that prevents new members from joining our club. While no longer required we will be relying on our entire membership to volunteer to help with the many things that are needed to keep OOYC running. We have a diverse membership with a wide variety of experience and skill sets and I encourage everyone to consider where you may help add value to our club. We’ll be working on updating our volunteer program during the next few months but in the meantime please look over some of the things OOYC can use help with that might interest you.
